Day 3: National Park Plitvice lakes

This day is spent in one of the most beautiful places in Europe. We start in the morning and drive all the way to Plitvice. On the way we visit the village of Rastoke, or so-called small Plitvice Lakes because of its azure-green waters of the Slunjčica river that run into the Korana River over a series of travertine barriers, thus creating a chain of waterfalls, rapids, pools, and cascades. It is Plitvice Lakes, we will admire the “Great Waterfall” – the largest fall of the Plitvice Lakes and in Croatia. After walking around, we stop in one of the restaurants for lunch, where you can try some of the traditional meals of this area. In the evening we are back in Zagreb to explore the city. In December and January,  there’s an opportunity to see Zagreb’s Christmas market.

Day 4: Nature Park Žumberak

Last active day is spent in Žumberak natural park. This is a hike companied with lunch and wine tasting in one of the wineries close to Žumberak. While not as tall as Medvednica, it’s special because it has a primeval forest which is close to the border of Slovenia also specific for the richness of flora and fauna, especially forests and lawns, as well as for archaeological sites from different periods. This is a hike to one of the park peaks, peak Japetić which is with its 879 meters above sea level traditional Croatian paragliding site. On clear days, it provides a view of various peaks of the mountainous in that part of Croatia, all the way to the Triglav Mountain in the Slovenian Alps. Near the peak, we are walking through a ‘magical forest’, area which is a Special reserve of forest vegetation and pass by the most beautiful waterfall of the area, Cerinski Vir (10 m). After the hike, we will visit one of many wineries in the area and depending on the time take a short stroll of the charming city of Samobor. We are back in Zagreb in the early evening.

WHAT ARE ACCOMODATIONS LIKE?

Accommodation is in a hostel, with a 5min walk from Zagreb’s city center. If sharing a room with other people is not to your liking, there’s an upgrade option. For additional 80€ you can get your own apartment within the hostel. Apartments can fit two people. These guarantee privacy. If you’d like to stay in a hotel, reach out to us, and we’ll find available options for you.

HOW DO I GET TO ZAGREB?

Zagreb is the capital with direct flights from and to Vienna, London, Zurich, Frankfurt, Paris, and other major European cities. Major highways lead to Zagreb and we provide parking space for those that will come with cars. Trains and buses are also available.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN THE GROUP?

We tend to have eight people on a single tour, but we might extend this to 15 on some dates.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Winter in Zagreb can be cold, so make sure to bring layered clothing, including winter jacket for strolling around the city, a jacket for hiking, a hat, scarf and glows or mittens. Make sure to also bring hiking shoes and thermos to keep your beverages warm while hiking. While it is not necessary we also suggest leg gaiters, an umbrella, and a headlamp.
